Assamstadt: Silent hero who actively tackles

Numerous “electronic counselors” are paving the way for flood victims in the Ahr Valley step by step back to normal.

Electrical engineer Patrick Megerle, who works for Ansmann in Assamstadt, also actively got involved.

Main-Tauber district. The voluntary association “Elektroseelsorge (r)”, financed by donations, is recruited from around 250 electricians, telecommunications technicians and other volunteers from all over Germany, some of whom always come to the Ahr Valley for some time, explains Patrick Megerle in an interview with the Franconian News. Their task is to repair silted and previously soaked electrical appliances such as drills, cordless screwdrivers, food processors and heating appliances in order to make them functional again.

Employed by Ansmann

“But we are also there to knock on slots in houses, install sockets and switches or hang lamps,” says the trained industrial electronics technician, who is employed by Ansmann in Assamstadt, giving an insight into the challenging work on site.

So far, he has spent an entire weekend in Walporzheim in the Ahr Valley — and has already successfully repaired many things. He was made aware of the “electrical counseling” by an acquaintance — “and it was immediately clear to me that I was involved,” says Megerle.

It was a matter of course for him to help. During the severe Kocher flood in Niedernhall in 2016, his family felt for themselves how they felt when a large part of their belongings was lost. Back then, people experienced a huge wave of willingness to help them get back on the ground.

“For me, the whole thing is a mutual give and take,” Megerle told our newspaper, who can well imagine going there again. He was aware of the plight of the people in Rhineland-Palatinate and wanted to do his part to help them overcome this difficult period.

Even more than four months after the disaster, its consequences are far from being eliminated. That is why it is all the more important that “there are such well-organized initiatives as 'electronic counseling, '” which help all those who are worst affected. “Only people who have not taken out elementary insurance and have lost everything benefit from our help,” explains the Niedernhaller.

Lots of thankful faces

“I've looked at many grateful faces,” says Hohenloher. This made him travel back home with a very good feeling — knowing that he had done the right thing in the right place. With solidarity and cohesion, much could be achieved.

“I can also always rely on the support of my employer Ansmann”
— Patrick Megerle

For the two board members Thilo Hack and Markus Fürst, it was a matter of course shortly after the flood to send a truck with batteries, batteries or flashlights to the Ahr Valley. And even now, the world market leader is generous and supports the “Electrical Counseling” campaign, including with battery-powered lamps.

MdL Jens-Peter Nettekoven stayed with Ansmann in Assamstadt these days. He reported on unimaginable scenes that took place in the flood area and said: “I would also like to personally thank everyone involved in Ansmann who promised their help so quickly and unbureaucratically. The power banks and flashlights were distributed directly to those affected on site. I was personally involved in the distribution and was able to experience first-hand what the help meant to local people. ”

Help is gladly accepted

Patrick Megerle, however, would do the same again at any time. Because he is not the only one who knows that in times of climate change, everyone in this country could be affected by such a severe weather disaster. And then any support from outside would be gladly accepted — as flood victims in Rhineland-Palatinate and North Rhine-Westphalia are currently experiencing.

The great gratitude he received during his stay in the Ahr Valley was and is the best motivation for the electrical engineer to do exactly the same again in the future — as a silent hero who actively gets involved.
