P 1011 Torpedo

A look back at history:

Vosper (Porchester/England) built two of these boats in 1958. They were successors of the MTB boats from WWII. The first one, the BRAVE BORDERER, was given the designation P1011. Equipped with 3 gas turbines, with 3500 HP each, the boat could travel nearly 100 km/h with a weight of 89 t. It was the fastest high-speed boat of its time! It carried 4 torpedos and had a 40 mm Bofors mounted on the foredeck.

Art.No. 321000130

On June 2nd, 1961, the Brave Borderer was on display for the the public to see within the scope of the "Oberwinter Beach Concert" in Oberwinter am Rhein, Germany. The Federal Navy ordered two of these boats. They modified and tested "Strahl" and "Pfeil" extensively

between the years of 1962-1965, but later sold them to Greece. Denmark, Malaysia, Brunei and Libya also have had units from the "Brave" class.

Details:

At full load the boats had a consumption rate of 2500 l/h. The fuel supply was 20,000 l. Each of the three exhaust pipes had a diameter of 80 cm. Tests revealed that the propellers made of a special material would begin to bend during high acceleration, making it impossible to reach the top speed. Jigs were later installed to prevent accelerating too fast. A true power boat!!

The Brave Borderer was sold in 1982; its sister ship, the Brave Swordsman P1012, was srapped in Portsmouth in 1998.
