Rechargeable battery

Technology Configuration - Rechargeable battery

NiCd – Nickel Cadmium

Series Configuration - Recommended

Cells are connected in a manner by which the negative end of the first cell and the positive end of the 2nd cell are electrically connected together.  The string of cells is theoretically not limited, but the more cells in a SERIES configuration, the more loss in performance and reliability are evident.  ANSMANN is accustomed to building packs with up to 20 cells in a series configuration.  We have and continue to build packs with more then 20 cell in a series configuration, but special attention is required.  In a series connection, the voltages of the individual cells which are connected are added to become the overall nominal voltage of the battery pack.  The current capacity of the entire pack will be identical to that of the individual cell.

Parallel Configuration – Not Recommended

NiMH – Nickel Metal Hydride

Series Configuration - Recommended

Parallel Configuration – Not Recommended

Li-Ion - Lithium Ion

Series Configuration - Recommended

Cells are connected in a manner by which the negative end of the first cell and the positive end of the 2nd cell are electrically connected together.  The string should be limited to a maximum # of 4 cells.  ANSMANN has and continues to build packs with more then 4 cell in a series configuration, but special attention is required.  In a series connection, the voltages of the individual cells which are connected are added to become the overall nominal voltage of the battery pack.  The current capacity of the entire pack will be identical to that of the individual cell.

Parallel Configuration – Recommended

Cells are connected in a manner by which the negative end of the first cell and the negative end of the 2nd cell are electrically connected together.  Conversely, the positive end of the first cell and the positive end of the 2nd cell are also electrically connected.  The string of cells is limited to a maximum # of 3.  If the application requires more then 3 cells in parallel, it can be achieved, but additional safety measures must be implemented.  In a parallel configuration, the voltages of the individual cells are NOT added to become the overall voltage of the entire battery pack.  The overall voltage of the entire pack is the identical to that of ANSMANN of the cells in the parallel configuration.  On the contrary, the current capacity of the individual cells are added to become the overall current capacity rating of the entire battery pack.

Series-Parallel Configuration

Cells are connected in a manner combining both a series and a parallel configuration.  The use of such configurations allow for a combination of higher voltages and higher current capacities.

SLA – Sealed Lead Acid

Series Configuration - Recommended
